Stormwater

What is Stormwater?

Stormwater is water from either rain or snowmelt that runs off roads, parking lots, roofs, yards, etc.and into stormwater pipes, ditches and culverts.

Why Should we be Concerned with Stormwater?

Stormwater is polluted water. As it flows over land it becomes contaminated with debris, chemicals, and sediment. This contaminated water is then directly discharged into waterbodies that we use for drinking, swimming and fishing.

What are some of the Effects of Stormwater?

  • Combined urban runoff and storm sewer discharges are the third leading cause of impairment to lakes and the second leading cause of impairment to estuaries.
  • Sediment in rivers and streams can cloud the water, making it difficult or impossible for plants to grow and killing fish.
  • Excess nutrients in our waterbodies can cause algae blooms. When the algae die, they decompose and lower oxygen levels in the waterbody. Low oxygen levels impair aquatic organisms.
  • Household hazardous wastes such as pesticides, fertilizers, motor oil, paint, etc. will poison aquatic life once they enter waterbodies.
  • Polluted stormwater will pollute our drinking water.
