Police Home
Recent events in the news, involving children, have brought about renewed interest in what kids should know to be safe at home, school or in their neighborhoods.
The following basic points should be stressed:
Do not talk to strangers - Strangers can be adults or other teenagers. They
may be asking you something or offering something. Do not let these people
near you, Say No, Get Away, and then Tell Someone.
Do not answer the door to strangers - If you do not know the person at the
door don't open it. You can always call your parent or another adult to verify
who a person is. This goes for any adult or teenager who you and your parents
do not know personally.
Do not talk to strangers on the phone - When you are home alone tell callers
that your parents or the babysitter is busy right now and tell them to leave a
number or just say goodbye and hang up the phone. You can call your parent and
have them call the people back.
Walk and play in pairs - Walking from place to place should be done with a
buddy. Never remain alone at a park or other area, especially after dark.
Always make sure parents know where you are and when you should be back - Part
of being safe is making sure parents can find you if they need to and to know
when something may have gone wrong.
Identify Safe Places to go to - Neighbors houses, School, the Police and other
friends are all safe places to go when there is trouble. Know how to reach
parents or other known adults.
Know how to get help - Know the proper use of 911. Have parents and friends
numbers posted and available for emergencies.
Common sense and a few rules can lead to a safer environment for everybody.
